Some timbers possess a quiet beauty that reveals itself gradually. Rippled Cherry is one of them.

At first glance, Cherry appears warm, understated and refined. As the light moves across its surface, however, the subtle ripples within the grain begin to emerge, giving the timber a remarkable sense of depth and movement. It is a wood that rewards closer inspection, becoming more characterful the longer it is admired.
For these boxes I wanted the Cherry to provide a calm and elegant framework for a more expressive lid. Two different interpretations emerged from the same design. One is crowned with a richly coloured Padauk lid, hinged with finely crafted solid brass hinges. The other is paired with a precision lift-off lid made from European Walnut, offering a cleaner, uninterrupted silhouette, but with waves matching the swirls of the cherry. Each approach creates a distinct personality while sharing the same underlying proportions and construction.

Unlike a traditional keepsake box intended for larger personal possessions, these pieces have been designed for everyday life. Their shallow form makes them equally at home on a writing desk, dressing table or bedside cabinet, providing an elegant place for watches, jewellery, spectacles, correspondence, pens or other treasured personal items.

Although modest in size, every element has been approached with the same care as my larger keepsake boxes. The corners are precisely mitred, the proportions carefully considered, and they incorporate beautiful contrasting splines. in the case of the cherry and walnut box, the splines are a tease of purple heart. Each component is made entirely from solid hardwood. There are no veneers, manufactured boards or hidden compromises. My aim is always to allow the natural beauty of the timber to become the defining feature of the piece.

Cherry has long been valued by cabinet makers for the way it matures. As the years pass it develops a deeper, richer colour, gradually acquiring a warmth that cannot be replicated artificially. I find it satisfying to know that the box will continue to evolve alongside its owner, becoming more beautiful with time and use.

Like every piece that leaves Grey Oak Workshop, these desktop keepsake boxes are intended to be used, enjoyed and eventually passed on. I believe the finest wooden objects should quietly accompany everyday life for decades, gathering memories as naturally as the timber gathers its patina.
