The "Duck House"
How it All Started
Bespoke Handmade Duck House
Every build begins with an idea and is brought to life through imagination, careful craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Originally intended as a water-side home for my ducks, I found that the versatility of the project allowed me to experiment with style and construction concepts. It quickly became apparent that the ducks were going to have to continue to live in their (still very nice!) shed further down the yard, and 'their' new shed would become my water-side office!
I thus took the opportunity to make it into a unique personal project, aiming to emphasise the rustic nature of the building fitting seamlessly into its surroundings. I also wanted to experiment with using some oak timber cut from old railway sleepers. This approach presented a combination of complications and positives. I was dealing with timber that was under significant tension until I cut the shape I needed, so what was intended to be a straight cut, sometimes sprang wildly out of shape. On the positive side, the shapes that were produced, and the wonderful character of the oak meant that I was able to create a building which looked as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. And I was able to make custom shaped joints to ensure the various pieces fitted snugly.
I was also able to incorporate a stained glass panel my father made for me some 40 years ago. It seemed the perfect place to fit a window with a riverside theme! and it is a reason to be reminded daily what I am trying to achieve at Grey Oak Workshop - to make beautiful things, whether bespoke garden buildings, customised garden furniture, or stunning and individual keepsake boxes from beautiful timber.
I am pleased with the final result. My handcrafted 'Duck House' combines practicality with striking, individual design and traditional timber craftsmanship.
I have used Larch cladding for the walls, Larch planks for the floor, and Larch shingles for the roof.
.One of the attractions of this design is that it can easily be used for the basis of a timber framed greenhouse, or orangery.
I feel that this piece reflects the creativity and flexibility behind our work, combining function, craftsmanship, and character in equal measure.
