Windsor House Extension Facades
For this project in Windsor, I am working with architects and builders to create oak-framed façades for a new house extension. It is an opportunity to bring the character of oak into the design of a home, with all the careful measuring, cutting and fitting that this involves.
One of the things I enjoy about oak framing is that the construction itself becomes part of what you see and appreciate. The proportions of the timbers, the way they meet and the individual character of the wood all contribute to the appearance of the building.
There is plenty to think about before making the first cut, of course. Beautiful timber is rather less forgiving of a misplaced measurement than a pencil drawing!

Features

A project like this involves fitting my work into a much larger undertaking. Working with the architects and builders means considering how the oak framing relates to the rest of the extension, as well as how the individual timbers fit together.
I enjoy this combination of practical problem-solving and craftsmanship. There is satisfaction in working through the details on paper, then seeing them take shape in timber. Each connection needs care, both for the fit of the pieces and for the appearance of the finished frame.
The Windsor project is progressing alongside a separate garden office build in Gloucester, so there is plenty happening at Grey Oak Workshop at the moment. These larger projects are a lovely opportunity to show another side of my work, using timber to contribute to the character of a whole building.
I will be sharing more photographs as the façades take shape. It is always interesting to look back at these early stages once the work is complete and see just how far a collection of carefully prepared timbers has come.
If you are planning an extension and would like to incorporate bespoke oak framing, please get in touch. I would be very happy to discuss your ideas, including working with your architect or builder.
